Jagat Yajñena Trupyatu

My dear little Dhrithi, let me tell you a story filled with light, love, and divine adventure — the story of how the thousand names of Mother Lalitā were born.

A very long time ago, when the universe was still young and full of wonder, something strange happened. From the ashes of Manmatha, the God of Love, rose a giant named Bhaṇḍāsura. He was big, loud, and terribly naughty. He scared the devas, shook the heavens, and made even the moon hide behind the clouds.

The devas cried out, “Mother Divine, please save us!”

At that very moment, a brilliant flame appeared — a flame born from the love of Śiva and Śakti. From this shining light emerged the most beautiful and powerful form: Śrī Lalitā Tripurasundarī.

But here’s the sweetest part.
Before showing Her mighty form, Mother appeared as a little girl named Bālā. She looked gentle and playful, like a child with bright eyes and a soft smile. But Her innocence was filled with magic. With just a tiny bow in Her hands, She could confuse and weaken any demon.

To defeat Bhaṇḍāsura, Mother created a dazzling divine army:

  • Varāhī, fierce and brave, who protected everyone

  • Śyāmala, wise and calm, who guided with intelligence

  • Annapūrṇā, loving and kind, who fed and cared for all

  • Aśvārūḍhā, fast as the wind, who led the charge in battles

  • Sampatkarī, joyful and strong, who brought prosperity and victory

  • The Nityā Devīs, who controlled the days and kept time moving

  • The Yoginīs, mighty guardians who watched over every direction

Together they defeated Bhaṇḍāsura and restored peace to the universe.

Meanwhile, far away, the sage Agastya wondered, “Who is this Divine Mother? How can I know Her? How can I receive Her grace?”

To help him, Lord Hayagrīva, the horse-faced form of Viṣṇu, appeared and told him the entire story. Then he shared a beautiful secret — in Lalitā’s heavenly court, the Vāc Devīs had once composed 1,000 sacred names of the Mother. These names were not just words; they were living mantras, full of Her love and blessings.

And that, my dear child, is how the Lalitā Sahasranāma was born — a thousand names, a thousand hugs from the Divine Mother, whispering:

“I am always with you.”
